Open Space, Sport and Recreation Needs Strategy 2026 (Unpublished)
City of Sydney
The Brief
To refresh the 2016 Strategy by updating its content and visual identity. The publication is comprised of two volumes: an executive summary and a detailed technical report.
The Solution
I began by reviewing the previous iteration to understand its structure, layout and approach to presenting information. I then assessed the new content and its variety, including photos, icons, graphs, maps and tables. To ensure consistency throughout, I established paragraph, character and table styles in InDesign, aligned with the updated brand identity. I worked through Volume 1 first, in a chronological process. Given the scale of the documents (Volume 1 being 200 pages and Volume 2 being 300), the styles had to be quite flexible to work with ongoing revisions and updates. I worked collaboratively with the Project Manager throughout the process to ensure changes were implemented efficiently. At the tail end, I set the reading order in the Articles panel and added image captions and alt text to support accessibility.
The result
The Project Manager has been very pleased with the outcome and I’ve been asked to work on other publications as well. Both Volumes of this Strategy are unpublished at the moment but with Council.
